Teeth whitening strips are thin plastic strips that contain a mild carbamide peroxide solution. The side with the whitening solution is pressed directly on to your teeth for a set length of time. Teeth whitening strips come in two different sets: One for your upper teeth, and another for your lower teeth. Whitening strips have become a very popular and convenient way for people to use - but how good is it? Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of teeth whitening strips.

The method of using the teeth whitening strips is pretty straightforward. You simply press it onto your teeth and leave it there for awhile. Commonly, you have to leave it for 30 minutes. You won't get much benefit from doing it just the once, however. Usually you will have to do this twice a day for 2 weeks. But this obviously varies from product to product.

Another advantage is that teeth whitening strips are convenient. All you have to do is pull out a strip and place the side with the whitening solution directly on your teeth, and let it stay on for about half an hour. It's that easy. Whitening kits, toothpaste or gels, are more bothersome to use. Typically, over the counter teeth whitening strips may take anywhere from a week to three weeks before you see a dramatic change in teeth color. However, this would definitely depend on how often you use your teeth whitening strips and the concentration of the peroxide solution in that product. Over the counter whitening products may have between six to ten percent whitening solution in them.

Some level of side effects tends to be a general problem when using teeth whitening strips as a method of whitening teeth with the most common side effects being gum irritation and sensitive teeth (both problems will generally disappear over time). The likelihood of suffering from such side effects is reduced if you use teeth whitening strips with the lower concentration of bleaching agent (6%) which will deliver the same result as the higher concentration strips but it will just take longer to whiten your teeth.

A similar level of side effects is likely to be experienced with other home based teeth whitening products due to the bleaching agent and / or the trauma of the bleaching trays. Custom made trays, which are now available without going to your dentist, are designed to minimize gum irritation as a result of the whitening process.
