Observe and Study The Wine
There are 2 methods to lift the wine glass, below I have provided explanation the methods of achieving this:

When drinking wine that’s chilled, do not touch the main bowl of the wine glass, you should always hold it by the stem.
When you are drinking a room temperature wine – hold the wine glass by cupping it in between your two central fingers now the bowl should rests on the palm of your hand.

The glass of wine should be held easily in your hand, hold it at an angle in front of something white. Out stretch your glass of wine to arms length, but be careful not the spill the wine! This never impresses. Depending on your sight you may alter the distance your eye is from the glass.

Now you will be at the time where you will examine the clarity of your wine, this is all about examining the wine. Wine comes in many colours and not the pink, red and white, by studying the clarity you should be able to see that wines can be green or yellow. We all should know that the grape determines the colour of a wine, it is always worth dropping this in to discussion to astonish wine novices if you are going for the “fake it” method, but be cautious you are not going to win any prizes for the statement.

Clarity is an indication of age. The more transparent the wine, this means it’s a youthful wine, if a wine appears to be murky this can indicate a flaw with the wine and I suggest you don’t consume it. When you are looking at the clarity of the wine you will see variances between wines, but the colour has little or no influence on the taste, but all wine experts appreciate the beauty of wine.

The Bouquet.
Still holding your glass of wine in the accurate manner, drop your wrist somewhat whilst bringing your glass of wine to a level position and rotate your hand so that the wine swirls gently within the bowl.To swill wine properly, very little wrist movement is actually needed. Just very slight circular movements combined with a right to left movement should do the job.

The reason behind all this swirling is to elevate the wine's scent out of the wine itself and into the empty area of the wine glass thus allowing it to be inhaled and savored. Move your glass of wine to your nostrils as elegantly as you're able and bring it in slightly below the end. Breath in deeply. Wait for a few moments and then breath in again. Don’t forget to exhale regularly or you may have dizzy spells.

At the point your are enjoying the fragrange of the wine that you conversing what you can smell in the wine, remember to be very truthful as people will suggest all kinds of fruit and substances influencing the odour of the wine.

Time for the Tasting

This is not about drinking great big mouthfuls and glasses of wine down like no tomorrow, you must take care to enjoy the tasting of the wine, furthermore in any 1 wine evening or party you may taste over 14 different wines, so take it easy.

Drink some of the wine, don’t gulp it, only put a small bit of wine into your mouth initially. Now close your mouth and roll the wine around your mouth and tongue to release the taste, you can either swallow the wine or spit the wine out, if you swallow exhale at the same time. Now you should be able to have the taste of the wine, again be courageous and tell people what you can taste: dryness and if you liked it.

There you go, this is not going to make you an Oz Clark overnight, but it may get you through your first wine tasting evening, if this is sounds like its still scary, let me assure you that 2 years ago I would have agreed, but once you try it you will never look at wine in the same way.
