This is a disorder that is known to be affecting 15% of the population. This disorder is also said to be affecting more women than men. These numbers are always on the rise with new cases of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) being brought to the attention of medical examiners each and everyday.

There is no way to diagnose IBS exactly. This is due to the severity and symptoms differing from case to case. IBS is known as a “functional disorder”. This term has been coined for a disorder in which the way your system works has been altered. This makes it more difficult to identify by means of many examinations, such as blood tests, x-ray, physical exams, etc.

Symptoms of IBS include but are not limited to:

Decrease or problems with interaction with the brain and the gut, Disturbances with the regulation of bowel movements, Abdominal Pain, Diarrhea, Heartburn, Constipation

Diagnosing IBS

Although it is hard to understand why people suffer from IBS it is believed to be a direct cause of stress. Even small events such as moving or changing jobs can cause IBS or IBS like symptoms. Many believe that IBS is a psychological disorder, when in fact it is not. IBS is a serious physical disorder and can be life threatening if not treated or diagnosed in a timely manner.

Many times IBS can be diagnosed by a medical physician. As stated above doctors may not be able to diagnose this disorder through an x-ray or blood test. Many times a more drastic measure needs to be taken, meaning that other investigations such as an endoscope exam of the bowel or the stomach and many time an ultrasound. Although an ultrasound may not be a specific as an endoscope exam, there is still a chance your doctor may be able to find something through and ultrasound.

Foods for IBS

We all know that diet is good for us. For those suffering with IBS your diet should be a little more exact. You should also try to avoid foods that may cause you to have an episode related to IBS. Many foods you should include in your diet include foods with high fiber content. Always drink water, and lots of it. Although soda sounds better with dinner and often time tastes better, water will help you digest your food at a normal pace, not too slow or too fast.

Foods you should avoid are coffee, milk, and some vegetables. Don’t eat too much at one time, if you eat small, well balanced meals through out the day the better you will feel.

Lastly, exercise on a regular basis. Not only will this help you stay fit, it will also help you control your IBS because you will be able to relieve stress while you are at the gym. Keeping stress bottled up inside all the time causes more harm than good to your body. So don’t be afraid to let it out.
