So, how come ornithology believed to be a great pastime? Well it helps you meet up with other people, learn about birds and enjoy nature's aesthetic surroundings.

If you know someone who is into this, you could surprise them on their birthday by buying something that matches his interest. First know what things ornithologists carry with them while they go to the woods to watch birds; then you'll know what type of bird watching gifts are likely to be appreciated.

Believably a hat is one of the easiest and least expensive items to buy. This could be a good idea as it should improve their vision and act as a sun blocker too.

Another idea could be to find a pair of 'combat' pants which has a lot of pockets as they can accommodate many items conveniently.

A bird watching vest is another item which has more areas to store items than a pair of combat pants. They can put their cell phone on one pocket, snacks, water, map, and insect repellent and more on the others making it within arm's length rather than taking this out of the back pack.

If you know their back pack is already worn out, perhaps you get can them a new one. Though backpacks are available in various sizes you would only need a small day sack since these people need to travel light.

The gift which costs most for a birdwatcher is a pair of decent binoculars. This is a costlier present because the quality lens which enables the birdwatcher see farther is expensive. Current technology has meant huge improvements in binocular design so it is possible to buy models that can be used at night and others where they behave like digital cameras and take photos.

A bird watching journal is also a nice gift to get because most ornithologists record what bird species they have seen and how many there were.

For a gift with a difference, why not pay for an annual subscription to a bird watching magazine, preferably one they already read. Published monthly (sometimes quarterly), they're able to see pictures of birdies which frequent distant places around the world.

If you are cash rich, you could think of sending the person to a bird watching vacation to another part of the Americas, North or South. There are thousands of bird species and whilst there is a huge diversity of species in the US, many have not made their home there.

So what should you buy and what would be most preferred gift? To know this you have to discuss with the recipient as to what his needs are. A chat can reveal a great deal and you would get plenty of ideas; you can then choose a gift which is within your budget yet would make the person happy.

After the time spent finding the right gift, it may light a desire in you to start bird watching in the future. Rather than just supporting that person, you could soon join them on excursions!
