Lessons In Golden Retriever Obedience Training

If you have ever had the pleasure of greeting a new litter of Golden Retriever puppies at a breeder's home, you know how purely irresistible these pups can be. As ten-pound balls of fluff, they seem like a delightful addition to any home. However, when that bouncy, energetic bundle of fur grows into a fifty or sixty-pound puppy that is completely out of control, the cuteness factor wears off in a big hurry. This is why it is so important to begin Golden Retriever obedience training the very first day that you bring your puppy home.

Keep in mind that the cute, ten-pound baby will quickly grow to a fifty or sixty-pound dog that will be much harder to control if he hasn't already learned proper manners and behavior. So while it may seem silly to begin Golden Retriever obedience training with a young pup, it is most definitely the right step on the road to owning an adult dog that you, your family and visitors to your home can enjoy.

One of the first types of Golden Retriever obedience training that you will work on with your pup is housebreaking. The best method for housebreaking most puppies is crate training. Purchase a crate that is big enough for your pup to turn around and stand up in, but not so big that he would be tempted to go to the bathroom inside. Since this little pup is going to grow into a big pup rather quickly, you can purchase a larger crate that includes a dividing wall that can expand and eventually be removed as your Golden Retriever grows.

When your puppy is not in his crate, you need to keep a close eye on the signs that he might need to go outside. This might include sniffing the ground, whining or going to the back door. Take him out right away if you see any of these signals and praise him when he does his business successfully. It is also good to take him out after meals and naps, when he is most likely to need to potty.

Once your puppy is a bit older, you can enroll him in a Golden Retriever obedience training class. These dogs tend to be very energetic and can be difficult to control at times, so formal training is often the best way to ensure that your Golden Retriever will be well-behaved and easy to manage.

If you have been through an obedience training course before, you can probably train your dog effectively at home, as long as you make sure to spend at least a few minutes every day working together.

To choose a training program for your dog, look for smaller class sizes and an emphasis on food rewards and praise. Since Golden Retrievers are eager to please their masters, this is generally the best approach to Golden Retriever obedience training. Avoid programs that emphasize punishment or intimidation as a method of training.

Because Golden Retrievers are almost always eager to please their masters, training sessions should be enjoyable for both of you and loaded with praise and positive reinforcement.
