Everyone loves a beautiful, snuggly pug, right? They couldn't be more perfect with their crinkled up face, little piggy tail, and amazing personality! However, if you are contemplating owning a pug, one must consider that there are complex Pug health problems that come with owning this beauty.

An adorable feature of a pug is the flat face however what makes it so attractive also causes several of its problems. The face is so small and flat that the eyes are literally too large for the sockets giving them a semi bugged out appearance. This keeps them from being protected inside the skull and opens them up to ulcers on the cornea that they can develop by accidentally rubbing their eyes against objects. This is not a life threatening problem but it does cause discomfort and sometimes blindness so their eyes should be checked on a regular basis.

One of the issues that you will find in a Pug is an elongated soft palate that is associated with the shape of the face. In the Pug, this flap of skin at the back of the throat can constrict the airway causing several annoying issues such as funny breathing, coughing and snoring. If any of these problems become to annoying they can be corrected with surgery.

Sadly, there are two other Pug health problems that are much more serious in nature.

A fatal disease which generally affects Pugs from two to three years old is known as Pug Dog Encephalitis. Some common symptoms of this disease may include swelling of the brain, seizures, muscle weakness, and trouble walking. There is not a lot of information about this disease, except when it strikes it is fatal. If your dog displays any of these symptoms, it does not necessarily mean he or she has Pug Dog Encephalitis, but you should take your pet to a Veterinarian immediately.

The other is called hemi-vertebrae which is a congenital abnormality. If your dog has this abnormality you will probably have to euthanize him. While there isnt much you can do about this, you can avoid the heartbreak of adopting a dog with this condition. The abnormality can be detected by x-ray. What happens is that the vertebra do not mature properly, causing a spinal imbalance. As the dog grows this imbalance causes pressure on the spine which can lead to paralysis of the hind legs.

If you're thinking of adopting a Pug you need to keep in mind the Pug health problems they can have. Fortunately the terrible problems only affect a small percentage of Pugs so you don't need to let it overly affect your choice.
